String Band
String Band was founded this year by my orchestra peers and I. It is essentially an elite group of orchestral talent holding membership in Davidson's top orchestra, Chamber A. Its members include Sarita Gara (violin), Lia Ferguson (violin), Katie Toledo (violin), Anna Pitstick (violin), Alicia Meyers (guitar), Cassie Davis (viola), Fiona Hurst (viola), Katherine Zu (cello), Jeff Hamric (electric bass), and myself (viola).
We focus on playing music which is very atypical for orchestral instruments. Instead of the classical genre, we select music towards the pop and rock sound.
Since the founding early this school year, this group has put in a momentous amount of work. We have had rehearsals from 3-6 every Wednesday working on a wide variety of pieces in preparation for performance. Many memories have been created during the long hours and group dinners. We are extremely excited to have our first performance May 12 at 7:30 pm at the Eliminate Concert, hosted at Davidson. This will be my final orchestra concert as a wildcat and I cannot wait to showcase our talents as a group.
I have learned so much since the time the group was founded to present day. I have experienced first hand the work that is put into founding a group and perfecting its skills. I have learned the importance of friendships created out of common interests. I have felt the pride of creating something out of nothing. It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I am proud to be able to be a part of it.
Below are posted three recordings of our pieces which will be performed at the upcoming Eliminate Concert May 12. They are Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas, Sorry by Buckcherry, and Sweet Child of Mine by Guns and Roses.
